HANGOUT ZONE

Want to have some fun? Want to take refuge from the boring lectures in the college itself? Where to go? What to do?

WELCOME TO L.P. or the Lover’s Point. I don’t know who coined this term but I find it the most appropriate. Here one can actually witness
Fun, masti, friends pouring affection on each other and playing pranks and of course, a few budding couples living up to its beautiful name.

It has been around 21 days of me being a fuchcha but within a week I became obsessed with an intangible immense love for this ‘HEAVEN’ in Hans Raj college. Be it 8:40 in the morning or 4:40 in the evening, this popular hangout zone is always overcrowded with gleaming faces: some anxious to complete assignments, some jeering, some cheering, some eager to get a seat in their favourite spot, some smiling waiting for the camera and some beguiling freshers or some satisfying their growling stomachs. Some singing and making merry or some jumping on his/her feet and standing on the platform on a friend’s request or persuasion. These are some of the numerous cherished moments to behold. I feel as if this point is free from all pall, gloom and negative energies.

Its strategic location is strikingly beautiful and PERFECT.

As you have seen it is the CENTRAL POINT of every student’s fancy.
Being there just completes my day and myself too.

Can’t wait to get there. Going to my ‘HEAVEN’. See you soon. Ciao.

DU IN MONSOONS

As the new session begins DU encounters a yet another journey of college life. The freshers are feeling overwhelmed with their new found freedom, the 2nd years are enjoying their senior-hood and the 3rd years are feeling jittery as there college days would be ending soon and so they need to figure out what they have to do next...
But besides all this it’s time to celebrate the new session with zeal. So why not begin with the season which changes a great deal the entire atmosphere of the colleges? At this time of the year it’s the monsoons which are enjoyed by a majority of people. Who doesn’t want to get drenched in the rain, cracking jokes and laughing all the while????
During monsoons there is a greater possibility for classes to get cancelled. So it is a boon for students since they get plenty of time to hangout at their favourite places. It’s the best time to gorge on and savour hot Maggie, mouth-watering momos and sumptuous kathi rolls. For the fashionistas it is the time to take out their fancy rubber slippers from their wardrobe and flaunt them in college. In the basketball courts and the football grounds boys would be seen playing to their heart’s content. All in all it’s a season to enjoy with friends as these days, when one can enjoy this bounty of nature aplenty without any worries, will never come back. So cherish every moment n your college and live life to the fullest.

PYAAR KI DASTAN....LOVE @ DU

“Cute”
“Smart”
“Handsome”
“Beautiful”
“Amazing”
These are some of the words we hear daily. Crushes and infatuations are a part and parcel of college life. Whether a fuchcha, a senior or a super-senior, all are at a lookout for some gossip or  for making new “friends”.
Here is a review of the experiences of some of my friends (for the matter of anonymity, I would only refer to them as “He” and “She”) :-

  • He has a crush on her from the first week of college. Even though they are in the same class, he has never approached her, even for being friends.
  • She likes him and he likes her, they are in the same class, they are good friends, and all their friends know about their crush but...there are still a lot of buts!
  • He saw her in the canteen once, followed her to her class, found her (quoting his words) “magnetic”, and so the daily procedure of stalking began. It’s been four months and she hasn’t even noticed yet.
  • They became friends through facebook, and later she came to the same college as him. Though he was a senior, they started hanging out together and hence, the tongues started wagging!!
  • She had a crush on him. She and her friends were in the same tute as him .She liked his pink t-shirt one day and as friends are, one of her friends told him that he looked good in it. So, for the next three day he wore the same t-shirt to college, much to the amusement of that girl and her friends.
  • He had a crush on her to the extent that he checked her facebook updates five-six times a day, but never commented or liked them. On her birthday, he and his friends followed her around. If she would have noticed; she would have seen him crossing her thrice, trying to catch her attention.

Stories continue.
But if we look around us, there are many people on the “lookout” for us. We just have to notice. Accept that we are “appreciated”. A story is not complete unless the last page has been edited.
So, Delhi University is filled with such cute stories - with tons of “He’s” and “She’s”!!
I noticed these cute little stories, that’s why I wanted you all to know, that it is time to look around at those eyes which admire you and make you feel “special”.

Violins heard, chorus singing. The hearts flutter. The song continues -
“Pyaar ki yeh ek kahaani suno..
Ek ladka tha,
Ek ladki thi........”

THE I - CARD

The newly issued I-card sits square in my pocket as I move for College (I wear the same Jeans for most of the week). From the first day itself, there was an unrest to receive our identity cards. The man at the counter shut the door on my face when I asked them if they were ready, so pestered he might have been with our constant visits. When they finally started issuing, the crowds were endless. It was only on the third day that I got my much awaited I-card (By virtue of me avoiding the crowds and queues).

There are vibrations of a distinct importance now. The little college emblem on the left side has a formidable value. The weight emerges not just from three days of standing in slow moving queues in the afternoon heat, sweating profusely, but in distinguishing it’s holder. The association that the Card creates becomes an association for life. It is a testimony of your merit, that you are member of a fraternity by virtue of being one cut above the rest.

When I understand this, I understand also that to some an ID would limit to a document for a SIM card or for entering into a Cyber CafĂ©. To lose it callously is an uninvited trouble for some, toiling in offices, scribbling applications and paying the penalty fee; but to the sentiments attached with the association, there is a mighty mass. Losing your card could amount to more than just callousness; it is not another Shopping Mall membership after all.  Few of us got school I-cards. The Officer’s kids had dependent cards, before college opened there were a lot of us who came of age applied for driving licenses and PAN cards. But this one has much in contrast. The significance of the I-card is in its very existence – the archiving of your qualifications: the marks you scored, the cut-offs you jumped, the place you reside, the ragging affidavits you filled, the entirety of your credentials. It is a collective effort. Pride in your college is what alone grants you admission, the right of entry to a wider world. The spirit of belongingness entices you to fall in love-with the place and its people.

ID-cards are flaunted too. For two consecutive days, we had bravoed each other. The passport pictures are an insight of what we were just two months back. After checks and rechecks, the misspelled ones were returned for corrections. It might be just a small card, but to restless spirits it is a lot. The substance in it is reflective of your ventures, your daring to go beyond Academics too. And if you are somehow tangled in the cityscape of Delhi or lost in a remote corner (though not very likely) - your I-card comes to your rescue again. There is a lot to it, than just the small rectangular card and permission to enter your College grounds. And yet, the underside of your Identity might just be a personal opinion.

The fee-slips have tattered and torn with overuse. It is a healthy respite to bear the new Identity Cards, the novelty, the shine glistens in the afternoon Sun. Lectures too have started on a regular basis. I had started to think College is for one Lecture in one day.  When I arrive for Evening classes now, the I-card slips out of my pocket. It feels important to gain entry with the cards….. College has just begun to be more happening.

MILESTONE

Standing in front of the mirror, her hair brush in one hand, and a black hair band in the other, she let her beautiful eyes rove over the reflection of her face, the glance portraying a glimmer of apprehension and yet an enduring hope for the future. A nagging curiosity tugged at her heartstrings, willing her to go on with the appraisal and notice the subtle changes which had arisen in her self and her life, even after she had convinced herself to do otherwise.

She was beginning to appreciate the fact that nobody would force her to put on a particular dress every morning as she geared up to face yet another day in school, or to plait her hair in two. She thought of the new-found sense of freedom that awaited her, the fresh responsibilities, the novel challenges and the subsequent lessons. She smiled, in anticipation of the sounds and sights of the city she had heard so much about and of its alluring crowd, of which she was herself going to be so much a part of in the coming years.

Yet all at once her mind drifted to the past which still held on to her with an unyielding grip, as if unwilling to let go of her completely…her four closest friends, kindred spirits, with scrapes, they got into school - passing notes in class, gossiping about every possible thing, quarreling sometimes because of the most trivial reasons and making up even more readily to make the bond even stronger. Now two of them continued staying in their hometown while the other three, including her, were moving away to different cities. She thought a bit longingly of her school teachers who had the time and the patience to take a personal interest in every problem she faced, her parents who were and will probably always remain so patient with all of her faults, her siblings who had made her life so much more interesting with their antics and their unconditional love. Her gaze moved to the reflection of the cupboard behind her, which held her (at once disliked but respected) school books, the crayons and water colours she had used so regularly until a few years ago, and the slam book and diaries in which she had made an attempt to capture her life. Now she was leaving them all behind, in an attempt to begin a new future. That was perhaps the reason she felt no regret for her decision to leave for Delhi, accepting as a necessary evil the fact that she would have to let go of a few of her beloved things, in order to fulfill the bigger picture, some pieces of which were still missing though she was sure that as of now she was on the right path towards completing that puzzle.

She could hear her father calling out her name from downstairs, his voice snapping her out of her reverie. She gave one final glance to her cupboard, her desk and the walls and then giving a final twist to her hair, she took a firm hold of her suitcase and briskly marched towards the gate.

THE HARDEST 55.

Gone with the wind are those 35-40 minute lectures during school time where the first 5 minutes were taken by the teacher to reach the class, 5 more minutes to silence the class and another 5 minutes for us to take out the text-books, note-books and pens. In this manner, a 40 minute period turned into a 20 minute teaching class. What stupendous days were those!

After entering college, Miranda House - the University of Delhi, I realised how hard a one hour (55 minutes to be precise) period can be. DU offers 55 minute slots for a single period and on an average you will have 4-5 periods a day. Imagine continuous 55 minutes - same place, same sitting posture, same boring Professors, all same-same-same!! How difficult it is for fervid people like us to manage! When it comes to concentration power, somehow even the nerdiest can manage till the first 40 minutes only. However, after that even they start looking at their watches, pleading for those lethargic needles to move fast. Especially during these days when the "mausam is awesome..", the perfect rainy weather, clouds, greenery and strokes of that soothing, hypnotizing, mesmerizing breeze that hits you and whispers in your ears saying "Moron! You are wasting such an ambrosial weather by sitting in the class! Idiot come out, smell the romance in campus and feel the love in the air". Consoling your inner conscience that asks you to go out and hunt for a partner for strolling around in the campus - the VC’s office garden, with it’s aromatic and colourful flowers, is waiting for you, the Vishwavidyalaya metro station's stairs are so incomplete without you, all food joints at Kamla Nagar seem so dead in your absence, the chaiwala outside Law Faculty seeks your way to come and ask for a cigarette silently in his ears and Tom Uncle's Maggie is not getting ready in 2 minutes because you aren't there. Go, move out and rush!

But you are helpless, you can’t manage to sneak out. DU's agenda of minimum 40% required to appear for examinations sucks!! In a way we only manage for the minimum requirement. And come on, if one has survived for unbearable 40 minutes then surviving for 15 more minutes and getting a 'P' in front of your name would be a wiser idea or else the 40 minute hard battle would be wasted too.
Ok so I will manage. I will. But, how? Now, here I tell you the tips to manage the hardest 55:
  • As soon as you enter the class, try searching for the tallest person in your class, and go hit the place right behind him/her. In case if you yourself are the tallest, then manage for the last row, last seat.
  • Keep your books, note books, pen exactly the way as if you are very keen to study.
  • If you like texting and chatting with people then this is the best time: with your left hand holding the cell phone beneath the table and right hand holding the pen, pretending to write down, you can text or B.B.M. easily, I know we have done a PhD when it comes to typing on our cell phone's keypad, we don’t even have to give a single look to the screen!!!
  • Not interested in texting? Then you can even read your favourite novel: just keep the novel there straight on your table, on one side of it keep your text book and on the other side of it your register and thus you can read it, with eye to eye interaction with your teacher - nodding your head in the way as if you are actually going through the lectures.
  • Next in line is the terrific situation. Busy people like us never have that much time to work on our assignments, dude! We have to do a hell lot of work, hanging out with friends, socialising, inter-college friendship, chilling out, ‘facebooking’ et al. when after reaching home. But our outdated teachers don’t understand how busy our schedules are and give us nasty assignments. Well anyways! Lectures are the best way to utilise your time and wasting it on assignments. Take your friend's assignment and start copying it during the lecture. Exactly with the same pace of your Professor, when he/she writes - write, when he/she stops - listen: write-listen-write-listen pacing with his/her speed and tone, nodding your head in a way as if you are following the whole lecture. And trust me you will be done with your assignment. This is what we call as "Best-out-of-waste!!!"
  • Next comes a solid point for girls with long hair. Open your hair, wave them (your teacher may give you cranky looks at this) and put your ear-phones in your ears and listen to your favourite tracks without any distraction from the lecture.
So friends these are just few ways to overcome the hardships of those hardest 55 minutes. Try these, they do work!!

THE FAKE IMPRESSION

Man is said to be god’s best creation, and god not only created man but also his destiny, as some would say. But some of us completely disagree with this and feel that man makes his own destiny. If seen practically, it is very true but at the same time man cannot always live the way he desires to. But some of us are not able to accept this bitter reality, especially when we are dissatisfied of the way we are or when we suffer from inferiority complex or when we idolize some people or a particular lifestyle and want to live that way and that is exactly when we hide our real selves behind a mask of FAKENESS, using the art of “IMPRESSION MANAGEMENT’’.

You must be wondering what this I.M. is all about. Well let me explain it to you. In our daily lives we come across people we know and don’t know and we make certain assumptions about their likes, dislikes and expectations in our minds and when we start portraying ourselves according to the way they would think is cool, hiding our real selves behind the mask of what we think is the ‘idol’, it is called I.M. in technical terms or FAKING in layman’s language. However, I.M. must not be understood in a negative way because in professional life it is the key to success but it gets a little wacky and also calls for trouble when used on a daily basis and that too with those whom we
meet everyday.

There are different reasons as to why the D.U. students idolize, follow or copy the Bollywood icons but what I feel is that we find them fascinating because our BOLLYWOOD STARS ARE THE REAL GURUS OF I.M. The queen of fake accent and piercing laughter - AISHWARYA RAI; our super skinny plastic doll - SHILPA SHETTY; the king of unnatural acting - SHAHRUK KHAN; an the so called boy-next-door - RANBIR KAPOOR, well if you are in DU I don’t think you can find a better reason to worship them!!

A year in college and I know exactly whom all to award with the sash of ‘FAKE-O-FREAK’ [THOSE WHO LOVE TO FAKE]. Girls screaming insanely while hugging their girlfriends and the moment that friend is gone the first thing she will say is "DID YOU SEE WHAT SHE WAS WEARING?” or “I HATED HER PERFUME". People waiting for MUSOC auditions and you find a group of guys fooling around with their guitars and then on stage they end up singing, albeit dissonantly, your favourite Linkin Park song, after which you decide never to listen to that song again. Then you see girls with tones of makeup on their face complimenting each other (well let me tell you girls rarely compliment each other but even if they do, the other should be smart enough to rush to the common room and check herself). This is not all, there is a variety of ways in which people fake. Let me share with you a small incident about this girl I knew (I call her the DRAMA QUEEN). She can fake it to the extent that it gets unbearable and the worst part is she thinks that its super cute and that no one can understand that she is fake!!! However, in reality a person even with a rat’s brain can make out what is she up to and trust me to being with such people is a torture of 3rd degree.

Anyways getting back to our story, August is the month when the monsoons shower its blessing upon us Delhi-ites. I always felt so happy to be born in this month, not only because I love rain but also because it is the month of the jungle king: the lion or the Leo. I along with two more people were a part of this Leo gang and so we thought of celebrating our birthdays together and guess what, the ‘Drama Queen’, the lead of our story was one of the Leos. I was to celebrate my birthday with her!!!

19th August, 2010 - It was raining heavily but I was in no mood to postpone the party, so we decided to go ahead with our plan of going to a pub in G.K. Everyone had a hard time reaching there, especially our ‘Drama Queen’ who almost fell in a manhole while managing her stilettos and her skirt, well she was the one who was crazy about going to a pub (though even I was extremely excited as I had never been to a pub throughout my school life). By the time we reached G.K. our tummies were growling and had started making us feel like real Leos. However, even after spending Rs. 2000 at Pizza Hut our tummies were dissatisfied and for once they wanted to yell out "Why the hell did you get us here when you knew the budget was low?”. It wasn’t our fault because our Queen wouldn’t listen to anyone because she thought that she was too posh to go to some reasonable place to eat and too insensitive to realize that our birthday budget was something around 5000-6000 bucks. We all were still hungry; cursing the Queen in our minds but at the same time trying to cheer up thinking of the excitement and the fun that awaited us in the pub and to our good luck that entry at the pub was free that day. Thanking our stars, we got inside the pub. The loud music and the ambiance had already made us high and we girls were just waiting to get on the dance floor but the guys as usual could not enjoy without the GOLDEN DRINK (beer). As soon as the drinks were placed on the table, our ‘Drama Queen’ rushed to take a sip of it. However the moment this golden drink rolled down her food pipe she shouted, "Yuck!!!! It Tastes Pathetic.” We all couldn’t control ourselves and started laughing. However, our laughter was full of sarcasm.

After all this she joined us on the dance floor, I forgot to tell u she loved dancing and was in the misconception of being better than the leading Bollywood choreographers. Hence she couldn’t bear being rejected by our Dancesoc and had cried so hard that she was called back home by her parents so that some counseling could be done. I still cannot forget the way she danced that day. It looked like she was fully drunk (but dude, who gets drunk after taking just a sip of beer?)  She then started dancing as Mallika Sherawat did on the song "MAIN TALLI HO GAYI". Suddenly she burst into tears and had to be escorted to the washroom several times (so that a scene would not be created). But how could that be possible with someone who loves to stay in the limelight until all the guys present at the pub got extra interested in her (that was exactly what she wanted). Most of them had crossed their fingers in the hopes that she was drunk enough to be taken somewhere or was a druggy ready for some fun and most of them had their eyes glued on her like a hawk wishing for some wardrobe malfunction to happen, which usually does happen with girls who are too drunk to understand what they are doing. After an hours nuisance Miss Dramebaaz was made to sit on the couch where one of the guys of our group hugged her, trying to calm her down and save us of the embarrassment that she gave. Again came a loud cry "Why did he dump me?  I am missing him a lot” followed by many cheesy lines (yes, of course, she was talking about her EX!!). The only thing that came to my mind at that time was at least he didn’t KILL her, you can understand how much I wanted to do that at that point of time but all I could do was to show some sympathy like everyone else did.

By the time we all were tired our ‘Drama Queen’ got back to normal and pulled all of us back to the dance floor and started off with her cheap cabaret dance. I can’t describe the amount of lust I had seen in the eyes of the guys present there but she was so lost in her own dance that we all had to pull her out of the pub. Moreover, guess what she said the moment we were out of that place: “Why the hell did you guys drag me out of there? We were enjoying SO much (to which I wondered whom all did she refer to when she said WE – well if you are smart enough you will understand what she actually meant, kehte hai na samajhdar ko ishara hi kafi hota hai!!). To this a guy replied: “From next time you don’t wear this porous skirt and we will let you dance to your heart’s content”. That poor guy had no idea what he was about to get in return of his honesty - a slap followed by a few English abuses and a little information about her skirt. The girl yelled at the top of her voice saying “I bought this skirt from Allen Solly (she had bought a casual skirt from a brand famous for its formals and felt so great about it). Don’t you dare comment on it.” The guy was in no mood to let go of her so easily and said “I saw a similar skirt in a flea market.” And we laughed like mad, his words were like a cherry on the cake, just the right words to end the day and to teach her a lesson in the most decent way…..

That day was full of fun, actually fun at the cost of a stupid girl who thought that she was smart enough to fake to the extent no one could understand. DU colleges are full of such specimens and what I realized that day was that people can do any damn thing to be in the limelight and loosing self-respect or respect in the eyes of others wasn’t a big issue for them, portrayal of a fake image to get popular was like a routine thing for them. The drive and the craze for getting popular is so much prevalent among the DU students that they are ready to forget their real selves, just like our ‘Drama Queen’ and trust me she would not mind giving you a few tips on how to become the best of her category - I really don’t understand why did the Dramsoc of our college reject her? I must say they are at a big loss.

A NEW LIFE.... A NEW YOU....

Hey!! Did you check out the notice board today?” This is the only sound that seems to be ringing in the college these days. This is something unexpected for me as in school I always thought that the notice board is thing of passĂ© for the happening college crowd. But now I know why?

The MUCH AWAITED AUDITIONS are here.

Bright and colourful posters adorning every wall, every pillar are amazing and the auditions breathtaking. Making to Hans Raj College had always been a dream and today, it has actually become a fantasy-land for me, broadening my horizon every second and showing me the unconventional stuff.
First, there was a marvellous orientation of all the socities of the college,  TERPSI CHOREAN- the graceful, SWARANJALI- the nightingales, OORJA- the energetic, DRAMSOC- the voice, ILLUMINATI- the brain-stormers, DEBATE- the influential, NSS- the generous. Ohhh!!! the list is never ending. These actually give everybody a chance to  flaunt their talent or be of service to humanity. My heart swelled with pride as I realized that the students are working so hard for the upliftment of the needy children whom I see on the streets of Kamla Nagar everyday.
The auditions were mind-boggling too. I became wary of the immense talent concealed behind so many unknown faces that I pass by everyday without a second glance. The real test was when I actually stood on stage. I could feel the chill creeping up my spine and numbness seeping through my limbs.
My heart throbbed wildly and my brain stopped functioning. It was then I realized that joining these societies is not all about fame or becoming a “hep” but all about exploring and grooming yourself. I saw a new girl inside me that day. I want to tell you my friends that you don’t have to be perfect to get into these. It takes a little talent and a lot of confidence and enthusiasm to get there. So I will rest my words by saying that:
Don’t sit idle,
Stand up,
Hit hard the paddle.
Even if you don’t get in,
Don’t give up.
Meet a new you,
Grab the chances few.
Give fear a shirk,
Only remember “HARD WORK”.

TO STUDY IN DU IS TO STUDY WELL

Before every onslaught in mind-boggling examinations, the nights tampering the board exams and the now routine Engineering and Law entrances, you tend to take a deep breath. “What next?” is a question that has been lingering ever since your tenth grade. But not anymore need you worry. The pristine environs of Delhi University says it all, you are in safe hands- not just for name is it India’s best University.
The South Campus with its fresh air bundling, the North Campus always jostling with activites, the colleges spread out through the Capital; all seem to grace you to a different life altogether, you live the DU life. Spend three years here, and no power can inhibit you from a different look at life. Yours is the life, and DU is the visa to the realms beyond. “I am just a first year”, is no excuse, every member is an equal contender; every new found friend seems age-old buddy. There is no stopping you, the first step is yours, and the escalation is DU’s. Reasons to love DU enchant endlessly.
Every college has its fresher’s mingling, strolling in the corridors and breathing in the air. There is a renewed zest; in each heart is an inspiration. There are in the classes handshakes by the minute and hugs by the hour. Phone numbers exchange like scribbles on papers. Unrest is beginning, a lot is to follow. The back-bench chatting has long started; the distraction by the fair ladies never left the blood. Bunking classes prove once again a safe exit, but the charm in classes abound larger than before. There is humour in the lectures, no student could ask for a better transformation from school. The students roam around in the college in vibrant dresses. The different hues, though separate from one another, seem to merge with each other. There would never be dearth of fashion statements as long as college life has its spell. Hang-outs are a round the year affair, discussions never run short of themes.
Each week is a new story, every day a new start- each hour there is a new crush. And the crushes end with a ‘crush’ too; but to the vigour there is no end point. No run-down can spoil your mood, the list of to-dos is ceaseless. The serene campus, affable friends, happening hang-outs and lovely ladies- what else do you need to ask? In every mind, there is furtive planning. Talents show in varied exponents, there is so much to do and yet little space to choose from. Before drooping to sleep, there lurks silent wishes to longer days and extended time. The equally gala nights are spent on guitars and murmuring. The events of the day cascade on the roommates, they jump in the same animation. The hours while as if they were seconds, ‘early to bed’ is not true anymore. Hale and heartiness comes naturally. There is no end to it all. Thus, life has graced so beautifully on us. With aspirations high, the spirits soar. With heightening spirits, comes the inner voice; the push to excel. We entered this vista, the window to our enhancement. Friends surround, and colours spark. This isn’t just the beginning, it is the inception.
In life there is gaiety, the spirits have never sailed so smoothly. The flags of aspirations soar high; fluttering in the air of dreams. Lead on, because tomorrow would just be bigger than Today.

 KNOW YOUR FRIEND FROM DU

After completing his schooling from MVM, Guwahati, Tonmoy Barua spent the five most glorious and beautiful years of his life at the Rashtriya Indian Military College, Dehradun. Being a war enthusiast he had an ardent desire to join the defence forces, but before he could gather the technical skills of war and strategy his keenness to serve the nation and don the star-studded uniform came to a halt when he was rejected on medical grounds. But as life goes on, he is now pursuing B.A. (Hons) Political Science from Moti Lal Nehru College, New Delhi and yearns to serve the country on different fronts.

LIFE IN DU

DU had always been my dream, my aim in life, the one place I wanted to see myself go… and luckily, to my delight I achieved it!! Shaheed Rajguru College of Applied Sciences for Women, Vivek Vihar. Well, I am a co-ed school pass out and when I made it to DU I went to a… WOMEN’S COLLEGE????? Oh well, so be it. I always wanted to pursue biomedical sciences and I made it... ‘aur baaki sab baaton se ki farak painda hai’??  Like every kid I also falsely believed that college is relaxed and laid back fun, a smooth sail on the sea of laughter and masti, how VERY mistaken I was. Wallet full of money, fancy clothes on my back, big shopping sprees in my fantasy and a scooty as a mode of transportation i.e. complete independent mobility…. Life cannot be any better right??  First day, orientation, girls all around dressed gorgeously and looking fabulous in their casual wear. The second and the third years were strutting in the corridors and amongst them the hesitant and self conscious first years could be easily spotted and I was one of them, Tulika Banerjee, course BMS. I will never forget that day because that day I made a lot of friends who would be my confidantes for days to come.  We were shy and formal with each other and probably one day we would look back and laugh of how stupid we acted that day.

Day two… OH MAN!! Break neck studies awaited us. After four months of ultimate ‘vellapanti’ even writing two pages were ‘haath ki aisi taisi’!!! Oh! And a nerve wreaking news, we had to draw our blood from our own fingers and ‘dhak dhak.. dhak dhak’ went the hearts of people who were nauseous even by sight of it….umm…only me....SIGHHHhhhhhh, tragic... but still... Teacher pe impression jamaana tha.. So everybody gave the brainiest of answers which would have made Einstein proud if he was around. It didn’t take us more than a nanosecond to realize that bunks will not be an option for us… WAAH ZINDAGI!! Then there came the mighty seniors and each and every of my batch mate had a slightly scared expression glued on their face, but it turned out to be of no use, no ragging of any sort happened, in fact they helped us with understanding the subjects more. They were ‘fultoo fundoo’!!!!

Teachers and seniors were excellent, and studies harsh, friends were sweet and burden massive. All in all we were harried but satisfied that we are in good hands and the future is bright. I think the foremost attraction in the college keeping aside the ‘smarties’ is the college canteen. AHEM!!! Well, one can’t really say the food is the focal attraction but the precious moments of ‘chillax’ time with your friends, the racket you make with the ‘habshi’ style attack of at least 10 girls on a plate of ‘meggi’. PRICELESS!! It’s an escape from the stress, a sweet retreat.

The CR elections were priceless!!! The contestants, all of them were my good friends and so this was so much more fun for me!! I was the official organizer… yes guys… this means that whenever I stood up I got a wild applause!! The contestants had to stand up and tell us why they deserve this post and another good friend of mine was the undercover camera-woman, basically we wanted to keep their videos so that we could laugh later to our heart’s content. I know…WICKED!!! Of course a very non-deserving person made it… actually nobody deserves to be slaughtered like that. And we got our pretty little scapegoat!!

I love all my college friends already; they themselves must be missing their school friends so much but are accepting new friends with open arms. Having said that, I would like to say that one thing is always there, the memories of the time spend in school, the indulgence called ‘dosti’, the loud echoing noise in the corridors “yaaaaaaaaaaaaayyyy dostiiiiiiii… hum nahiiiii todengeeeeeeeee”…  now, even the sight of the school bus leaves a big smile on my face. One week has passed and I have realized one thing for sure…college is not about how much money you carry but how you carry yourself, not what type of clothes you wear but how you wear your attitude, it’s about finding ways to get to home when my scooty breaks down, it’s about getting lost somewhere and not panicking, it’s not about full-on freedom but understanding out duties and it’s surely not about imposing yourself but experimenting with yourself, finding the real ‘you’, making new friends and being brave and having the courage to draw even your own blood (having said that, you should know, I DID IT!!!). DU is life guys, a lucky chance for a lucky few, live it and LOVE IT!!!!!
